This is part of a larger issue of rape within the military.  Some estimates reveal that more than 1/3 of women in the armed services are raped during their service.  If you serve in the US military and you rape or sexually assault a fellow service member you have an 86.5% chance of keeping the crime a secret and a 92% chance of avoiding court martial.  

Join me in asking the Department of Defense to create a national database for sex offenders.

It would mean a lot to me if you checked this out and - if you don’t want to sign it - gave it some thought.

Rape is a serious issue in the US armed forces. As an Army servicemember, I was taught about reporting sexual assault, unlike the woman who started this petition. Otherwise, conditions are much the same as they are in the Marines, with regard to sexual assault and rape. Countless hours of thoughtfully crafted educational material created by the Department of Defense seem to have done little to correct the culture of misinformation.

Here are some real statements I have heard from my fellow Soldiers:

• This is why there shouldn’t be women in the military.
• Now I’m even more afraid to work with a woman.
• 50% of rape accusations are fake.
• I have a hard time taking a woman seriously when she says she’s been raped. She might just be mad at someone, and want revenge.
• Nobody can rape me, I’m a man.
• What do they expect to happen? You go to the sandbox, and suddenly all the 3s are 10s.

Until the military can correct its culture, servicemember perpetrators of violent sexual crimes, or persistent harassment, should be able to be held accountable by the civilian world. Plus, for the sake of fairness -if civilians have to register as sex offenders, we military personnel should have to, as well.
